We have a family tradition of a daily green smoothie (or that’s the goal–most days it happens!). I consider it a nutritional insurance policy for my boys daily diet. I am pretty certain that they would not be getting enough greens in their diets with out it! My boys have been drinking green smoothies for years and have actually come to love them and even ask for them. I have several recipes, Beginners Luck Smoothie, Frog Nog, and I explain my method here. It really is a great way to get some seriously nutrient dense food into your kids, easily!
Well, recently I have branched out a little and have been making green smoothie bowls. We love to top them with berries and homemade granola or nuts. My whole family LOVES them and we find it is the perfect breakfast or snack on a hot summer day!
There are two keys to a good smoothie bowl. First is a powerful blender–I like the Vitamix or Blendtec blenders. They are both awesome!! I had the Blendtec of 10 years and I am currently using a Vitamix. I would recommend either one! The second key is frozen fruit! Frozen bananas are a great way to get sweet creaminess without added sugar. You can change what frozen fruit you want to add, but if you add dark colored fruit, your bowl will no longer be green. I like to add darker fruits like berries on top, and only use light fruit like bananas, pineapple and mango inside the bowl.
We love to top ours with some homemade granola (a staple at our house):
Simple Cinnamon Granola
PrintGreen Smoothie Bowl
- Yield: 1 serving 1x
Ingredients
- 1–2 cups spinach (I add 2 cups and sometimes use kale for one cup)
- 1 cup of frozen banana slices
- 1/2 cup frozen pineapple or mango* (or a combination of both)
- 1/2 cup vanilla Greek yogurt (or any yogurt of your choice)*
- 1/4–1/2 cup water or almond/ coconut milk
- assorted toppings: fruit, granola, seeds, nuts, honey
you can also leave the yogurt out and add a 1/2 avocado for creaminess
- *any frozen fruit will work
Instructions
- Make sure you have a strong, powerful blender that will blend up the frozen fruit. I like to use a Vitamix or Blendtec. You can also use a food processor.
- Add all of the ingredients to the blender in the order listed. Blend on high for at least 2 minutes or until smooth. Scrape down the sides of the blender as needed. The smoothie will be very thick. Add more milk if needed to achieve the consistency that you prefer.
- Pour into a bowl and add your favorite toppings.
