Alright, here is the promised Instant Pot Steel Cut Oats Post recipe!
I LOVE steel cut oats, but rarely have the extra time to make them in the morning, since they require about 30-40 minutes of cooking time and need to be stirred quite often. That is why the Instant Pot is SO perfect for cooking Steel Cut oats. I can throw water (or almond milk) and oats into the Instant Pot and forget about it while I do other things. Even though there is only a 4 minute cook time, it takes a few minutes to heat up and then to get the perfect texture, you need to let them naturally vent for about 20 minutes. That is about 30 minutes total—leaving you free to shower and get ready for the day! You don’t need to mess with it at all, but you will have a perfect bowl of steel cut oats waiting for you in your Instant Pot!
I also love that this recipe makes enough for leftovers. You can divide it into single portion size containers and store them in the fridge for a quick and easy breakfast later in the week. Another good idea is to portion the oats into a silicone muffin pan and flash freeze them. That way you can pop all the individual portions out into a freezer bag and easily grab one to reheat whenever you want.
I like to add my toppings and mix ins after it is cooked. Some of my favorite toppings are:
*Banana slices, maple syrup and some almond butter
*Fresh berries, walnuts, pecans or almonds, brown sugar
*Spoonful of pumpkin puree, cinnamon, brown sugar and pecans
*Apple chunks or apples sauce, cinnamon and almonds
*Peanut butter and mini chocolate chips
How do you like to eat your oatmeal?
Instant Pot Steel Cut Oats
Ingredients
- 2 cups steel cut oats
- 5 cups water or almond milk
Instructions
- Combine the steel cut oats and water (or almond milk if using)in the bowl of your Instant Pot and give them a stir.
- Cover with the lid and make sure you turn the vent at the top to “sealing.”
- Press the manual button and then set the time to 4 minutes on high pressure.
- The cooker will automatically start within a minute.
- It will take the Instant Pot a few minutes to build up pressure and then it will cook for 4 minutes. When it beeps, allow the pressure to naturally release for about 20 minutes. (The timer on the Instant Pot will remain on after the cooking cycle to let you know how long it’s been kept warm, unless you press the off button)
- Once the 20 minutes have passed, turn the vent to the “venting” position to release any remaining pressure. Carefully remove the lid and stir the oats to incorporate any liquid that has risen to the top. After stirring, the oats should have a nice and thick texture..
- Serve warm with your favorite toppings~brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, a splash of vanilla, toasted nuts, coconut, fresh fruit etc.
- Leftover oats can be stored in individual containers in the fridge for a fast breakfast on the go. I have also frozen the oats in my silicon muffin pan–then once frozen I pop them out in to a zip loc bag. Reheat in microwave!
