When a bag of dried cherries caught my eye at the store, I remembered these fantastic Cherry Lemon Scones my little sister Erin and I had made together the last time she visited Utah (when we were all still there). We invited our other sisters over and had a delicious treat together. The scones were wonderful and of course the time spent with my sweet sisters was too! Remembering our fun afternoon together, I bought the cherries and a lemon and came home to make these. They were scrumptious, just like I remembered, but it made me miss my sisters even more! It was not as fun to eat these without them! So make these scones and invite some people you love over to enjoy them with you.

Cherry Lemon Scones

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 c. all purpose flour
  • ¼ c. granulated white sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ c. unsalted butter, cold and cut into pieces
  • ½ c. dried cherries
  • Zest of 2 lemons
  • 2/3 c. buttermilk

Egg mixture for brushing tops of scones:

  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 Tb milk
  • Turbinado surgar, or white granulated sugar, for sprinkling the tops of the scones OR

Glaze:

  • Juice of one lemon
  • Powdered sugar–just keep spooning it into the juice until desired consistency for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400° and place rack in middle of oven. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Cut the butter into small pieces and blend into flour mixture with a pastry blender or two knives. The mixture should look like coarse crumbs. Stir in the dried cherries and the lemon zest. Add the buttermilk to the flour mixture and stir just until the dough comes together. Do not over mix the dough.
  3. Transfer to a lightly floured surface and knead dough gently four or five times and then pat the dough into a circle that is about 7 inches round and about 1 ½ inches thick. Cut this circle in half, and then cut each half into 3-6 pie-shaped wedges. Place the scones on the baking sheet. Make an egg wash of one well-beaten egg mixed with 1 tablespoon of milk and brush the tops of the scones with this mixture. Sprinkle with raw sugar (if desired).
  4. Bake for about 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
  5. Glaze if desired.

    I got married in March of this year. While I was dating my (then boyfriend), he kept bringing up a marketing study about Flirty Aprons that one of his teachers had showed him in a business class. He has been in love with Flirty Aprons ever since! When we got engaged, I registered for an apron, but didn’t receive it. I keep thinking that one of these days I’m going to have to surprise him by wearing a Flirty Apron in the kitchen!

    If I did get one, I think I would go with either the Sassy Black or Scarlet Blossom apron.

    Just made these scones except I used dried blueberries instead of cherries. They are to die for! I also didn't have a zester so I peeled the lemon and chopped the peel very fine. I only used one lemon this way, but the lemon taste is still strong. Thanks for the recipe.

    I am a mom of two who loves to cook. I am also a seamstress and I have made several aprons similar to these as gifts. I made one for a friend that told me it was her magic apron. When she was having a hard day and didn't feel like cooking she would remember her apron and how cute she feels in it and then magically she would be in the mood to make dinner! When my sister-in-law came for Thanksgiving she was shocked to find out that I have never gotten around to making one for myself! I've just never had the time. Therefore… I would LOVE the Sassy Black so that I can have a magic apron of my own!

    I hope I am sending this to the right place. I loved the apron website. So hard to chose my favorite! I think I settled on the black sassy! So cute and I WOULD love to win! I have had quite a week! I have five children under the age of 8. I have an eight year old and then two sets of twins. My second set are two and so naughty! This past weekend, my little girl covered herself and her brother in aquaphor along with the carpet, lovesac, and furniture. Needless to say since most of the aquaphor has in her hair, I washed her hair at least 40 times! We used every home remedy listed on a million websites. It turns out that Dawn dish detergent was what did the trick! Who knew! Anyway, if I had lots more time, I could tell lots more stories! I love the website and cook from it almost daily.     I never even had an apron until a couple of years ago. A friend of mine couldn't believe I didn't have one, so she dug around in her drawer and gave me one of her own. I have to say, it makes cooking so much more fun. Plus, when you make something tasty, and you're wearing your apron, it's like, "Ha! I AM a cook!"     I like the scarlet blossom. By the way, have you ever heard of freezing the scone dough before you put it in the oven? I had that as a tip on a recipe I used. You just put them in for 30 min. before you bake them and it is supposed to make them extra flakey. They were the first scones I had ever made and they turned out great, but I don't know if it makes a real difference since I hadn't done them before.
