I have had this Soft Pretzels recipe for ages… why haven’t I made it before?! Mel gave it to me a long time ago and boy, have I been missing out. Actually it may have been wasted on just me because my little 2 yr old Gabe had a blast making them with me! He loved rolling out the “snakes” then “painting” them with egg wash and sprinkling on the salt (our pretzels ended up very salty!) This will definitely become a favorite treat to make with Mommy. They are a super fun way to spend an hour together creating… and they’re very tasty! Whether or not you have a little person to help you make these soft, delicious pretzels, you still need to try them out! They are just a few basic ingredients and are very simple to make. Have fun!!
Rolling out the “snakes”…Painting our pretzels…Note the tongue-in-lip look… it is not necessary but obviously aids in concentration! 🙂And our finished masterpiece…
Soft Pretzels
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cup warm water
- 1 pkg yeast (or 1 Tb)
- 1 Tb sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 4 cups flour
Instructions
- Add sugar to warm water then sprinkle yeast on top. Let float for a minute then stir to dissolve the yeast. Let sit for 10 minutes as yeast activates and starts to foam. Add salt and flour and knead 5-10 minutes; adding more flour as needed to reduce stickiness. Divide dough in to 12 pieces and roll each piece into a long rope or “snake”. Twist into pretzel shape and place on nonstick baking sheet. Make an egg wash with one egg and a Tb of water, lightly beaten together. Brush pretzels with egg wash then sprinkle liberally with Kosher salt. Bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes or until lightly browned.

I was searching for something to make for my kids for after school snack today and came across these…PERFECT! They were easy and yummy! Our favorite dip was melted butter in one cup and cinnamon sugar in another (really healthy I know!) but we also liked mustard, and cream cheese too. I will be making these often. (I love your blog by the way, thank you for all the great recipes I get here!)

This is the recipe I’ve used for years. The ingredients are essentially the same but after forming the pretzels you dip then in a warm baking soda water bath-this gives the pretzel a nice ‘skin’ (because you are really suppose to boil pretzels-but this is too much work!)- I also brush mine with an egg wash too to make it shiny. You’re right about them not being good the next day-BUT they do freeze wonderfully. When you’re ready to eat more pop them in a COOL oven and then turn the oven on to 300 degrees. Take them out as soon as the oven finishes preheating and they perfect!

Hi Sunnie, I just barely saw your comment -sorry!! I think I used a whole egg and a few Tb of water that time (and it didn't taste like scambled eggs!!:) but you could definitely use egg white instead!

Do you use an egg wash or an egg white wash? I wasn't quite sure with your directions, I don't want my pretzels to taste like scrambled eggs.

I love these–and have not made them for so long. I used to make them all the time when we were first married and i was working full time. They were perfect for a quick bread with dinner–since there was no raising time. Yours look perfect and what a darling little helper!! Oh–and I noticed your beautiful greeen backyard thru the windows. What a view!!

These look so easy, I love it! Your caption about the "tongue-in-lip" made me laugh, it reminded me of how my little brother always stuck his tongue out when he was concentrating and my dad would call him "Michael Jordan" whenever he did it. Great work!

I will come again and look when I have a little more time. Looks very beautiful! Love the tribute to your momma. My momma is in a nursing home with dementia. One of the hardest things in my life to walk. I can love on her though!!! I look forward to heaven when we can be together again!

How cute is he??!! It really does look like he had lots of fun making those 🙂 I've always wanted to learn how to make homemade pretzels and judging by this recipe, it doesn't look that difficult. Maybe I'll get my two kids in on the fun too 🙂
