Mmmm, I am excited to share this recipe with you for The BEST Southern Biscuits and Gravy around! Before I moved to the South, I had never even tried Biscuits and Gravy before. It was not a dish we have ever had ‘out west’, at least not in my family. Here in the South, you can get biscuits and gravy anywhere. It is a very common menu item and it seems like everyone loves it and makes it! In fact the first night we slept in our new home here in Chattanooga, I woke up to five hungry little boys and an empty pantry and fridge. We had a crew of painters here finishing up some work, who took pity on my boys, and sweetly offered them some biscuits and gravy that their boss had picked up for the crew that morning. They had an extra ‘To-Go’ container to tide us over until I could get to the store and buy a few things. At first my boys did know what to make of it, but after a bite they were sold! It was our first taste of good ole Southern cooking and we loved it! Now, this is definitely a special occasion type of food. We usually eat healthier breakfasts on a daily basis with things like green smoothies, whole grain cereals, steel cut oats, and fruit on the menu but every once in awhile a couple of my boys request Biscuits and Gravy and we happily indulge! Last week, I was in charge of breakfast for my high school sons early morning bible study class, and he wanted Biscuits and Gravy. I went here to The Sisters Cafe to find the recipe and realized that I had never posted it! Oops! So here you go my friends! I hope you enjoy. We like to use these incredibly delicious and easy Freezer Biscuit recipe here, but you can also buy the ones that come uncooked in a bag in your freezer section (Pillsburry or Mary B’s are great too). This recipe comes from my dear friend Mary Bess who is a true Southern lady. Her original recipe is double this–we just make less for our family but know that it can easily be doubled or tripled for a crowd.

- 1/2 cup all purpose flour ( heaping –a little extra)
- 1 quart of milk (2% is best, but I usually use 1%)
- 1/2 Tablespoon salt
- 1/2 tsp pepper
- Frozen Biscuits
Instructions
- Okay frozen biscuits in the oven to bake according to recipe or package directions.
- While biscuits are baking, brown sausage in a large pot over medium heat.
- Do NOT drain fat.
- Add flour and cook and stir for a few minutes or until mixture begins to thicken.
- Slowly add milk as you stir, stopping after each 1/2-1 cup, allowing the gravy to thicken again. Continue this process until you have added the full quart of milk. Add salt and pepper and stir. Continue to cook for another 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until gravy is desired thickness. Remove biscuits from oven when they are slightly golden brown. Split a biscuit horizontally and ladle desired count of sausage gravy over open biscuit.
